Starbucks making York its largest distribution center
- York County, with huge new facility, will be Starbucks' largest distribution center in world.
- Company states that 1.2 million-square-foot center will increase distribution 35 percent.
- About 300 additional full-time jobs are expected over 3-5 years.
Starbucks is one of the largest coffee companies in the world, and York County soon will serve as its largest distribution center in the world.
The company formally announced its distribution expansion into a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse at 1605 Bartlett Drive in East Manchester Township in a Thursday morning news release.
Starbucks is expected to move into the new facility in mid-September, according to spokeswoman Linda Mills.
The new center, which will add an estimated 300 full-time jobs during the next three to five years, will increase the company's distribution capacity 35 percent, the release states.
“As we looked at our long-term growth plans for the business and the current demands for distribution at scale, we needed to invest in additional capacity,” Jim Wells, vice president of Starbucks distribution and supply chain operations, said in the release.
Wells pointed to the success the company has seen in the area since opening its roasting facility, also in East Manchester Township, as the major reason it chose to expand in the county.
"We’ve invested in the community of York for the past 21 years, and we can think of no better location to continue to grow our business and invest in jobs and economic development,” he said in the release.
The company has signed a 10-year lease on the warehouse, which was developed by Harrisburg-based Hillwood Development.
Mills noted that the new facility will allow the company to expand its opportunities in the Starbucks Inclusion Academy, a six-week training program for people with disabilities.
The program, which typically has classes of about a dozen trainees, has led to many full-time hires, Mills said.
