York Haven site hosting Zombie Apocalypse Live
Zombies have long been a staple in scaring haunted house visitors, and York Haven's Halloween Park will soon allow those visitors the opportunity to fight back.
Halloween Park, in conjunction with Colorado-based entertainment group 13th Floor, will host Zombie Apocalypse Live, a tactical, live-action zombie experience, May 20-22.
The event will include arming participants with weapons meant to replicate M4 carbine guns. The infrared replicas weigh the same as a real M4 and offer 30 percent of the actual gun's recoil, according to the event website.
And apparently, people are dying for the chance to aim those guns at the living dead.
Tickets for the event went on sale Friday, and Stacey Eckenrod, owner of Halloween Park at 100 Hykes Mill Road, said 1,200 of the 1,500 available tickets had been sold by Tuesday.
Ashley Russell, spokeswoman for 13th Floor, said her company has been putting on similar events for nearly two years, and each one has sold out.
Russell said people walk through the course in teams of four or five, and the actors who play the zombies get really into the roles.
"(The zombies) are not allowed to touch you, but it's more of an adrenaline-type thing," she said. "You're an active participant as opposed to in a haunted house."
Eckenrod said he met 13th Floor representatives at a Halloween show in St. Louis, and he was looking to host something "out of the ordinary" during the off season.
He said they are using at least 45 zombie actors, many of whom previously played zombies in the park's haunted houses.
Russell said participants can choose from three different missions — recruit, special ops and elite special ops — which range in price from $29.99-49.99 and differ based on the length of the experience and amount of ammo.
Eckenrod expects each group's shooting spree will last 30-40 minutes, and he hopes to find some time to participate, he said.
