The state Department of Agriculture conducts annual inspections of food-serving businesses to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices. Schools are inspected twice per year, according to the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.

Whether an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector. There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant. Called "critical violations," they include food temperature issues, employee hygiene and issues with chemicals and how they're handled.

Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment.

Below is a list of establishments that were inspected April 6-12.


Regular inspections:

Shangri-la, 2150 White St., 15 violations

Action: Violations included employee personal items observed in server area on shelf with drink glasses; employee's open beverage container observed in food prep area; buckets filled with raw chicken stored throughout kitchen with no covering; raw egg shells observed stored over ready-to-eat sauces in refrigerator; shelf observed encrusted with old food, dirt and debris; insect control devices hanging from ceiling over meat preparation table and dishwashing area; raw chicken, sugar, beef, carrots and flour stored directly on floor; bus pans of raw chicken observed thawing at room temperature on floor; floor and shelving in walk-in cooler and kitchen area lined with cardboard; plastic deflector plate inside ice machine is cracked; shelving not cleaned frequently enough; old food residue observed in hand wash sink; floor in walk-in cooler made of wood; paper towel dispenser observed empty at hand wash sink; floor and walls in kitchen area are extremely dirty and dusty; and ceiling tiles missing in kitchen area.

Taco Bell, 2189 White St., 8 violations

Action: Violations included in-use tongs stored hanging from shelving pole over fryer; food pans, knives, thermometers and scissors stored as clean were observed with food residue; loose or broken door hinges observed on doors of heating cabinets; counter top under food presses not cleaned frequently enough; hand wash sink does not have hot water; slop sink observed leaking at hose and faucet connection; and floor under fryers extremely dirty, greasy and dusty.

Speedway, 3311 N. George St., Emigsville, 8 violations

Action: Violations included in-use tongs stored on top of sneeze guard; ammonia concentration at improper level in warewashing machine; fountain soda nozzles observed with black, grey, pink slimy mold-like residue; interior ceiling of microwave observed with food residue; clear liquid observed leaking from bottom of frozen slushy machine; floor under shelving and equipment in back room not cleaned frequently enough; facility does not have its original food employee certificate posted for public view; and soap was not available at hand wash sink in coffee brewing area.
