Sam Mohmand still has burn marks on his arms from working at his parents' pizza shop in southern California as a teenager.

Sam Mohmand, of New Cumberland, opened his first restaurant, White Rose Pizza, in York City last week.

Mohmand's parents named their shop New York Pizza, but he wanted to elicit a more localized feel with his newly opened York City shop, White Rose Pizza.

White Rose Pizza, at 600 Chestnut St., is in its second week of operation, but Mohmand said he's going to hold off for a while on having a grand opening.

"I want to get a better feel for the neighborhood," he said. "The pricing, people's tastes; it's for them, so the menu will constantly be evolving."

The menu currently features chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, pasta and New York-style pizza with a sauce Mohmand said he's been told is "slightly sweeter than others, but in a good way."

The restaurant will also soon feature an ice cream machine, he added.

White Rose Pizza employee Nate Schumaker prepares ingredients for the day at newly opened York City restaurant on Wednesday, March 30.

Mohmand, of New Cumberland, previously worked in telecommunication sales but left because he always wanted to be his own boss, he said.

He chose to open his shop in York City because he felt the sense of community residents express in the area would be perfect for his family-run establishment.

The shop currently operates Tuesday through Saturday, with delivery available.
