Weis Markets will be closing its Manchester Township store at the end of March, according to a company spokesman.

Dennis Curtin wrote in a statement that the decision was made due to the age and size of the building at 1500 N. George St. in Northgate Shopping Center.

"It was no longer possible to operate a full service supermarket in this location," he wrote of the 19,000-square-foot space. "Today, the majority of our stores are 50,000 square feet or more with expansive service departments and wide selection."

Store employees have been offered positions in one of the company's other regional locations, Curtin wrote.

Weis has nearby locations at 2160 White St. and 1800 Roosevelt Ave., both in West Manchester Township. Curtin wrote that Weis remains committed to York County, where it has upgraded five stores in recent years.

Weis currently serves as the anchor tenant in Northgate Shopping Center, which also houses Dollar General and New China Kitchen. The center recently underwent facade improvements.
