Just over two months into its existence, York Fuel Stop is the only York-area gas station to drop below the $2 per gallon threshold.

Larry Dorsey, of West York, said "it's about time" a gas station in York dropped its prices below $2 per gallon as he filled up his pickup truck's tank. The independently owned gas station, located at 1129 W. Market St. in West York, first dropped the price of its regular unleaded gas to $1.99 per gallon on Tuesday, according to owner Ranjit Cseema.

Dorsey, who travels a lot, said he had recently returned from a trip to Virginia, where gas was about $1.75 per gallon.

"This is the third time I've filled up my tank (at York Fuel Stop)," Dorsey said. "I was surprised when I got here today and saw the price, though. Last time, it was $2.05."

Cseema, who bought the station from Hess Corporation, said he's committed to offering the cheapest gas prices in York and the current price will remain for a while. Cseema owns gas stations in Hanover, Philadelphia and New Jersey, and offers the cheapest prices there too, he said.

According to, Cseema's prices are the cheapest in county by several cents, with BJ's in West Manchester Township ($2.05/gal) and Sam's Club in Springettsbury Township ($2.06/gal) coming the closest. The average price of gas in York Wednesday morning was $2.13 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

Jeff Pelton, a senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said that when one station is able to drop its price significantly lower than those in the surrounding area, it usually indicates that they're buying a lower-grade product. But Cseema said he purchases his gas from the same refineries as everyone else.

Pelton said prices look they will continue to fall another 15-20 cents into January and possibly February, and he expects BJ's, Sam's Club and possibly the host of companies that includes Rutter's, Sheetz and Sunoco currently at $2.09 per gallon to drop below the $2 threshold soon.

Not to be outdone, Cseema said he will continue dropping his prices to remain the cheapest option "no matter what."

According to GasBuddy records, there was a gas station in York that dropped its prices below $2 per gallon on Jan. 11, 2015, but it's possible that was a promotional deal, Pelton said.

The last time a station in York was "legitimately" below that threshold was likely in May or June 2009, he said.

Nationally, the average price per gallon has been hovering around $2 per gallon for a few weeks, sitting just barely above it Wednesday morning. Pelton said he expected that figure to drop back below $2 on Thursday and remain there for some time.

The average first dropped below $2 per gallon on Dec. 19, according to Pelton, which was the first time since March 25, 2009.
