Rapidly expanding MOD Pizza planning two York locations
A rapidly expanding pizza business based out of Seattle is planning to open two locations in York next year.
MOD Pizza, described by company spokeswoman Charlotte Wayte as "the pioneer of the fast casual pizza segment," currently operates about 95 restaurants in 14 states, including four in Pennsylvania.
The company has sites in West Manchester Town Center and Shoppes on Pauline in York Township, the first approved sites in central Pennsylvania, according to Wayte.
The company recently signed a lease on the 2,560-square-foot property in York Township, and the restaurant is slated to open during the third quarter of 2016, Wayte wrote in an email exchange.
The two locations are scheduled to be among more than 100 MOD Pizza stores opened during 2016 — including one in England — with plans to continue opening 100-plus stores each year for the foreseeable future, Wayte wrote.
The first MOD — which stands for made on demand — opened in downtown Seattle in 2008, and the company expanded to 31 stores by the end of last year.
The restaurant's artisan-style pizzas are hand-cooked in an 800-degree oven in less than three minutes. The 11-inch individual pizzas are one fixed price — currently $7.87 in Pennsylvania — regardless of the number of toppings.
The menu also includes hand-tossed salads, handspun milkshakes, house-made lemonade and iced tea, and local craft beer and wine, Wayte wrote.
The company was founded by husband and wife Scott and Ally Svenson, who previously co-founded Carluccio's and Seattle Coffee Company in England.
The latter was eventually purchased by Starbucks, and Scott Svenson became president of Starbucks Europe.
Wayte added that MOD always donates 100 percent of pizza sales during opening day to a local non-profit charity.
"This is a big part of the MOD culture, with a mission to make a difference in the lives of our employees (by putting our people first) and the communities where we do business," she wrote.
