Wegmans coming to Lancaster
People living in Lancaster will no longer have to drive more than 40 minutes to shop at a Wegmans. Those in York, on the other hand, will still have to make quite a trek to patronize the popular supermarket.
Wegman's Food Market Inc. on Sunday announced its intention to build what is expected to be a 120,000 sq. ft. store in Manheim Township, just outside the city of Lancaster on Harrisburg Pike, east of its interchange with U.S. Route 30, according to a press release.
The store will be part of a larger land development initiative called The Crossings at Conestoga Creek, a mixed-use project — intended to include restaurants, shopping centers and residences — headed by High Real Estate Group LLC.
When the new Wegmans opens its doors in 2018, it will for some Yorkers be the store with the shortest commute. The chain's locations in Mechanicsburg and Hunt Valley, Md. — which are popular with Yorkers willing to make the drive — are nearly an hour drive from York County.
"Lancaster residents have been asking us to build a store for a long time," Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans' senior vice president of real estate, said in a press release. "In fact, we know that many now travel to our other locations to shop. Now we will be able to bring incredible customer service, help with meals, and consistent low prices to them."
But Yorkers have been asking, too.
The Facebook group We Want a Wegmans in York PA, which surfaced in 2010, to-date has more than 3,500 likes. The page is full of pro-Wegmans content like "17 reasons Wegmans is America's Best Grocery Store" and commenters voicing desires to bring a store to their home city.
"I would shop at Wegmans if there was one in York, or even if it was 20 minutes away," said user Jennifer Schneider in a recent post. "But I can't manage the 45-minute drive with my schedule right now."
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is an 87-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. It is known for having a broad range of products, particularly in its produce and organic sections.
