After doubling its staff and revenue each year since 2007, custom automotive shop Legacy Innovations needed at least double the space.

Owner Troy Spackman finally found the property he started searching for nearly two years ago in Manchester Township. Currently operating Legacy out of a 7,000-square-foot property at 1807 Andrews St. in West York, Spackman recently completed the purchase of a 14,400-square-foot industrial building at 265 Emig Road.

"We're really excited," Spackman said of the new property. "We've been stepping all over each other for three of (our) five years (of operations)."

For Spackman, who competed on TruTV's "Motor City Masters" last year, obtaining business hasn't been the problem; it's having enough space to be able to take on more projects. He estimated he's probably been forced to turn away about 90 percent of work requests from potential customers.

Necessary move: The current space can only fit about 12 cars, while the new location — which he hopes to be fully moved into by November — can accommodate about 30, with potential to make additions to the building as the business grows. He's hoping to double his customer base with this move, while also bringing in more local clients.

"My average customer lives four to eight hours away," Spackman said. "The biggest problem is everybody can't afford it. We're competing more on a national level with what we do. I would like half of my customers to be within an hour."

With the smaller space, which Spackman plans on leasing out after the move, Legacy has been forced to mostly just take on complete custom building jobs for financial reasons.

Spackman believes more space will allow his company to take on smaller customization projects as well.

His 12-man staff currently operates in six departments, and he's looking to immediately hire more employees in three of them: metal fabrication, body and paint, and mechanical.
