The application submission period for medical marijuana business permits closed Monday, though the state Department of Health could continue to see applications trickling in the rest of the week.

The period, which opened Feb. 20, allows for applicants to include a form from the U.S. Postal Service that dates the application by March 20, according to department spokeswoman April Hutcheson.

One of those last-minute applications will be from Five-Leaf Remedies Inc., which is hoping to turn an industrial building in York City into a medical marijuana growing/processing facility.

The benefit corporation was recently granted a zoning variance by the city's Zoning Hearing Board, and spokeswoman Christina Kauffman said they sent in their application Monday after months of extensive research.

"We wanted to take as much time as afforded us to make sure our application was as perfect as it can be," Kauffman said.

The selection process is expected to be hyper-competitive, as the department said it expected to receive about 900 applications for up to 12 grower/processor and 27 dispensary permits available.

York County is part of a 13-county region that includes Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Lebanon and Perry counties. The region is slated to receive two grower/processor permits and four dispensary permits, one of which is earmarked for York.

Another company, Viridis Medicine LLC, received zoning approval from Hellam Township supervisors to build a nearly 50,000-square-foot medical cannabis growing/processing facility at 6287 Lincoln Highway.

Company officials could not be reached Monday to comment on when they submitted their application.
