PURE PREPS: Northeastern boys' volleyball team back atop PVCA Class 2-A state rankings


After claiming the championship of its own prestigious Bobcat Invitational for a fourth straight season, the Northeastern boys’ volleyball team finds itself in a familiar spot.

The Bobcats are the top team in the state in the latest Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class 2-A rankings, switching spots with previous No. 1 Manheim Central.  

The invitational victory Saturday was the second of the season for Northeastern, which also has the Cambridge Classic title on its resume this year. The Bobcats are also 4-0 in nontournament play. The five-time defending PIAA Class 2-A champions also already own a road victory over No. 8 Cochranton.

After falling to Central York in the first round of the championship Gold Bracket at the Bobcat Invitational, York Suburban also cracked the 2-A state rankings, coming in at 10th after being unranked a week ago.

Manheim Central at No. 2 and Palmyra at No. 6 round out the District 3 contingent in the 2-A rankings.

In 3-A, Central York remains the only local entry, sliding back three spots this week to No. 5.

The Panthers put up a solid showing at the Bobcat Invitational, which featured 14 teams ranked in the top 10 of the state at the time. Central advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship Gold Bracket before falling to Cumberland Valley.

The Bobcats then defeated Cumberland Valley in the semifinals before claiming the crown against Hempfield.

Also from District 3, Hempfield climbs into the No. 2 spot in 3-A, while Cumberland Valley improved to third and Central Dauphin fell back a spot from ninth to 10th.

North Allegheny remained No. 1 in the 3-A state rankings.
