BLOG: Six York-Adams wrestling teams in district field

Six York-Adams League wrestling teams have qualified for District 3 action, and two of them could square off in an interesting Class 3-A quarterfinal battle on Tuesday night.

Saturday was the deadline for matches that counted toward the final District 3 power ratings.

Sunday, the district officially announced its 3-A and 2-A pairings for the upcoming team tournaments.

In the larger of the two classes, 3-A, a total of 16 teams qualified for the tournament. In 2-A, eight teams made the field.

Four York-Adams teams made the grade in 3-A, with two qualifying in 2-A. The top four teams in 3-A will qualify for the state tournament, while the top 3 teams will make states in 2-A.

Dallastown's Hayden Jones (left) wrestles Spring Grove's Trent Baker in a 160-pound bout earlier this season. If the Wildcats and Rockets both win their first-round District 3 Class 3-A match on Tuesday, they'll face each other in the quarterfinals later that night at Spring Grove.

3-A: The 3-A tournament begins Tuesday night, with the first round and quarterfinals taking place at the locations of the top four seeds in the field. One of those top four seeds is Spring Grove, which qualified No. 3 with a 14-1 mark. The Rockets will take on Governor Mifflin (15-7) in the opening round at 6 p.m. Mifflin enters as the No. 14 seed.

Spring Grove will not only host the first two rounds, but also the semifinals and consolation wrestle-backs on Thursday. That means the Rockets have a prime opportunity to make the state tournament without having to travel.

The next highest seed in the field from the Y-A League is Dallastown at No. 6. The Wildcats finished 13-3 and will face No. 11 Shippensburg (9-2) Tuesday night. Dallastown will also be wrestling at Spring Grove, so, should both Spring Grove and the Wildcats win their first-round matches, they will face each other in the quarterfinals later Tuesday night. The Rockets won the league meeting between the two Division I rivals two weeks ago, 40-24.

Gettysburg (10-2) made the tournament as the No. 8 seed and will travel to Central Dauphin where it will take on No. 9 Cocalico (13-4) in the opening round, with the winner getting either the top-seeded host Rams (14-1) or No. 16 Elizabethtown (10-2).

Traveling to Exeter will be No. 15 South Western. The Mustangs (15-4) will challenge the host and No. 2 seeded Eagles (18-1) in the opening round. Should South Western pull off the upset, it'll then take on the winner of No. 7 Big Spring (11-3) vs. No. 10 Red Land (16-3).

2-A: In the smaller class, both Bermudian Springs and Delone Catholic made the eight-team field and, wouldn't you know it, drew each other in the opening round.

The quarterfinals and semifinals for 2-A will be held on Wednesday night, with Bermudian Springs being one of two host sites. The Eagles clinched the class' top overall seed with pulsating 31-30 win on Saturday over rival Boiling Springs, which ended up seeded No. 6. Bermudian enters the tournament with a 19-1 mark and will face its Division III rival in the Squires. Delone enters at 10-4 overall and as the No. 8 seed in the field. The winner of that match will take on the winner of No. 4 Northern Lebanon (15-2) vs. No. 5 Newport (13-4) immediately following the quarterfinal matches.

Bermudian beat Delone in the regular season, 44-24. Northern Lebanon is the defending District 3 2-A champion.

Both tournaments conclude on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Milton Hershey, where the championship matches will be contested, along with the consolation matches to determine seeding for the state tournament in 3-A and the third-place finisher and final state qualifier in 2-A.
