BLOG: Koons now knows his road to possible state title

Dallastown freshman sensation Holden Koons is just four wins from a PIAA Class AAA state boys' tennis championship.

On Monday, he learned his road to a possible state title when the brackets for the PIAA tournament were released.

Dallastown's Holden Koons earned a straight-set singles win on Tuesday vs. Manheim Township.

Koons, the unbeaten District 3-AAA champion, has a first-round match at 9 a.m. Friday against junior Xandy Hammitt, the third-place finisher from District 11.

If Koons wins that match, he will advance to Friday's quarterfinals at 3 p.m. and face the winner of the first-round match between District 11 champion Nick Kshatri, a senior from Parkland, and District 7 third-place finisher Robby Shymansky, a freshman from Fox Chapel.

The other district champs in the field are: District 1 champion Michael Dickson, a junior from Downingtown East; District 8 champion Rajan Alagar, a sophomore from Obama Academy; District 10 champion Logan Williams, a senior from McDowell; District 2 champion Sahas Chandragiri, a senior from Abington Heights; District 6 champion Nick Vanden, a sophomore from State College; District 7 champion Chris Gladden, a senior from Canon McMillan; and District 12 champion Andrew Lutschunig, a sophomore from La Salle.

If Koons would advance to the state semifinals, Gladden or Lutschaunig could be waiting. The other district champions are on the other side of the bracket, meaning Koons could not face them until the finals.

The semifinals are 9 a.m. Saturday, while the championship and third-place matches will go off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

All of the action will take place at Hershey Racquet Club. Koons is very familiar with that site. That is where he won his district title.
