2-day barbecue festival nears

The borough of Spring Grove, the Spring Grove Chamber of Commerce and Explore York will host Rutter’s Presents: Smoke in the Grove BBQ Festival, Friday and Saturday.

The community festival will feature the Pennsylvania State BBQ Championship, with more than 50 teams competing for $9,000 in cash prizes and the chance to compete in the annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and The American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri.

On Friday, more than 10 amateur teams from local fire companies, police departments and veterans’ organizations will compete in the First Responder’s Cup to see who makes the best wings. Public voting will be open from

6 to 7:30 p.m. at a cost of $5 for a six-wing sample and one vote. Also, “Sing” will be shown on a big screen at 9 p.m.

Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to

8 p.m. It will feature food and music.

Admission is free. All of the proceeds will benefit the local community.

Chicken barbecue set for Saturday

St. John Lutheran Church, 2580 Mount Rose Ave., will host a chicken barbecue, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

The cost is $8 per meal, and walk-ins are welcome. The proceeds will benefit St. John Alms Fund and Servants Inc.

Locust Grove United Church of Christ, 1035 Locust Grove Road, will host a chicken barbecue and bake sale, 11 a.m. Saturday, rain or shine.

Dinners will be sold for
