FirstEnergy Corp. has awarded Science, Technology, Engineering and Math grants totaling nearly $8,000 to eight teachers in the company’s Met-Ed utility service area.

The York County winners and their projects are:

  • Mary Jane Deter, Friendship Elementary School: Students in first grade will study renewable energy using a portable desk windmill and pedal bikes, with a focus on engaging students with learning disabilities.
  • Amanda Oswalt, Dover Area High School: Disabled students will use computerized LEGO kits to develop life skills and independent problem-solving abilities.
  • Kristen Wertz, North Hills Elementary: Students will use kits to build robots and then compete in a series of challenges to determine which robot is the most capable.
  • Kevin Wolf, West York Area High School: Students studying engineering will design and build a battle robot, then compete against other teams’ robots in a competition.

Grant recipients, recommended by local educators, must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators.
