The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a variety of programs in recognition of National Earth Science Week in October.

The schedule is:

  • Saturday, Oct. 8: Fossil-collecting trip to New Ringgold, Schuylkill County, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost: $5 per person or $15 per family. Registration: 428-1961 or JeriJones@yorkcountypa.gov.
  • Sunday, Oct. 9: Nixon Park geology hike, 2:30-4 p.m. through the southern portion of the park.
  • Monday, Oct. 10: Kid’s geology hike for ages 8 and older, 9-11 a.m. at Rocky Ridge County Park.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11: Dusk to Dark geology hike, 6-8 p.m. at Rail Trail County Park, Brillhart Station parking area.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 12: Geology of Glen Rock, 4:30-6 p.m. Heritage Rail Trail County Park, Glen Rock parking area.
  • Thursday, Oct. 13: Park excursion rides, 10 a.m. and 2 and 5 p.m. at Rail Trail County Park, Brillhart Station parking area. Cost: $10. Registration: 840-7440.
  • Friday, Oct. 14: Geology along the Northern Extension Heritage Rail Trail bike ride (8.2 miles), 1-3:30 p.m. from John Rudy County Park.
  • Saturday, Oct. 15: Chickies Rock geology hike, 10 a.m.-noon from Breezy View parking area. Cost: $3. Register by noon Friday, Oct. 14: 295-2055.
