Chris Herren to speak
Former NBA player Chris Herren will discuss his struggle with substance abuse and his efforts to bring awareness to the issue, 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at York College's Waldner Performing Arts Center.
Herren, a high school basketball legend, realized his dream of playing in the NBA when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and then was traded to his hometown team, the Boston Celtics, in 2000.
Herren struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career. He refocused his life after becoming alcohol and drug-free in 2008.
In June of 2009, he launched Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren, a basketball player development company.
He also founded The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those touched by addiction and to educate people of all ages about the dangers of substance abuse.
Local addiction treatment and educational organizations will staff resource tables in the lobby of the center before and after his presentation.
Admission is free.
