York County Parks' signature event improves every year.

This season, Christmas Magic features more lights (all LED), Santa and Mrs. Claus, nightly entertainers, and an always spectacular train display that highlights the night.

An unofficial plea from parks officials suggests that, if at all possible, visit the Rocky Ridge Park event during the week. Weekends are a circus--and not in a good way--with lines of cars stretching beyond the park entrance. Upon arrival, lines of people at the entrance, Santa's house, food building and the train house slow down the adventure.

Excellence is always excellent, no matter how many times it's been done or seen, and Christmas Magic proves it. Now in its 33rd year, Magic has become a family tradition. One gentleman said he brought his son here when he was four years old. Now 28, that son lets Grandma and Grandpa carry on the tradition with his four-year old son.

The entrance is different this year, and that's to say 'better'. Still in place is the archway, but more lights brighten the drive to it. Get your camera ready now, before you miss the other lights.

Once in the park, five heated pavilions warm up those chilly nights. Remember too, that snow isn't necessarily a problem for all the electric connections. Raindrops, however, can halt the show in a flash, so to speak. To check whether Magic is open, check its Facebook page, Twitter page or call 840-7443.

You can whiz through the lights in an hour, but plan on more time. The kids will enjoy the challenge of dropping coins into the coal cars in the train house or confiding in Santa all their secrets.

Magic is open Monday through Friday 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 5  p.m. to 9 p.m.  Admission is $8 for adults,  ages 4 to 12 $6. Under four years is free. For seniors, $7.
