What's happening in York this weekend
The Original Semi-Annual 170th York Antiques Show and Sale runs Friday-Sunday, Feb. 2-4, at the York Expo Center's Memorial Hall East. The show has 96 exhibitors featuring 18th- and 19th-century American, English, primitive and period furniture and accessories. Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. It's time for February's First Friday event, 5-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, throughout downtown York. Highlights this month include Jazz in the City, 5-7 p.m. in The Studio at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., use the Philadelphia Street entrace, $5 admission; around the corner at the Capitol Theatre, free screening of the 1991 "Beauty and the Beast," 6:30 p.m.; and music, specials and refreshments throughout the Market District, Royal Square and WeCo neighborhoods.
The Goodridge Freedom Center presents a free musical and poetic celebration of the 155th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, with tours of the center, 123 E. Philadelphia St. The program includes a reading of the proclamation and performances by local poets and musicians. Free.
DreamWrights Center for Community Arts kicks off its 2018 season with the classic tale of "Jane Eyre," Feb. 2-11 at the theater, 100 Carlisle Ave. The novel by Charlotte Bronte has been adapted by playwright Thomas Hischal to show Jane's story at three different ages. Showtimes: 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, and both Sundays. Tickets: $15 reserved, $10 general admission in advance, $12 general admission at the door. Violinist Odin Rathnam will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in DeMeester Recital Hall at York College. Free and open to the public.
Red Lion High School students are making a walk in the winter woods more exciting with a scavenger hunt/learning hike, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Hidden Laurel Parking Area in Rocky Ridge County Park. Hikers gather in the enclosed Pheasant Pavilion, then set off for the scavenger hunt, followed by hot chocolate and a snack by the fireplace. Free. Information: yorkcountypa.gov/parks-recreation.
Comedian Paula Poundstone hits York for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Strand Theatre, 50 N. George St. Poundstone has shared her wit and comedic timing on several HBO shows and is a regular panelist on "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me" on NPR. Tickets start at $24.75.
