York Weekend Extras for 1-15: Bagpipes, bluegrass

The Band of the Royal Marines and the Pipes and Drums of the Scots Guards will bring their bagpipes and ancient military traditions to the stage at the Strand Theatre, 50 N. Teens can live out a fantasy during a "Beauty and the Beast"-inspired dance, 7-10 p.m. Saturday at DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, 100 Carlisle Ave. The event, designed and planned by teens, invites kids 13-19 to visit a fairy-tale set, complete with photo booth and props to tell the story, while dancing to pop tunes as well as songs from the Disney musical. Bluegrass legends The Seldom Scene come to the Capitol Theatre, 50 N. George St., 8 p.m. Saturday. The Seldom Scene has been playing together for more than 40 years, with their weekly D.C.-area residencies including bluegrass versions of country, rock and pop music. Tickets: $25. The first-ever York Story Slam event will happen at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Hound Taproom, 57 W. Market St. The monthly series lets attendees enter to tell a true story based on the theme of the month, with 10 people given five minutes each to share their story with no notes or props. This month's theme is New Beginnings. Each storyteller is scored based on content and presentation, and the winner receives an exclusive York Story Slam-branded journal set from Story Supply Co.
