Larry Richard Metzger, 85, of Spring Grove, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023, surrounded by his family at his home in Spring Grove. He is the husband of Joan L. (Gunnet) Metzger who he married 60 years ago on May 5, 1962. Larry was born March 31, 1937, in Williamsport and was the son of the late Samuel and Bertha (Fritz) Metzger. He graduated in 1954, from Williamsport High School in Williamsport, PA, and in 1958, from Penn State University as a Pre-Med student. He worked for P.H. Glatfelter Company in Spring Grove for 30 years as an Environmental Supervisor, before retiring in 1999. Prior to starting his professional career, he proudly served his country as a navigator in the United States Navy achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was a member of St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in York New Salem where he freely gave of his time and talents to the betterment of the congregation. His greatest joys in life other than his family were Penn State sports, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He loved spending time at his cabin at Lake Raystown with family and friends. He was active in the Paper Mill’s bowling and softball leagues. He was the number one fan for all of his children and grandchildren’s sports, activities, and accomplishments. In addition to his wife, Joan, Larry is survived by his three sons, William Metzger (Kelly) of Spring Grove, Neal Metzger (Billie) of Seven Valleys and Samuel Metzger (Kimberly) of East Berlin; his daughter, Sharon St. Hart (Morton) of Thomasville; Thirteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Metzger, and Gary Metzger. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 25, 2023, at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church, 99 East George Street, York New Salem, PA. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Jacob’s Union Cemetery in York New Salem. Officiating at his service will be his pastor Reverend Lisa Hair. Arrangements have been entrusted to Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.
