September 7, 1941- January 14, 2023 James Emmet Connell, age 81, of York, PA died Saturday, January 14, peacefully in his home. James was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and was married to Mary Alma Connell for 59 years. James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who is survived by his wife, Mary Alma Connell; two sons, James Connell (married to Geraldine Daly) and David Connell (married to Tracy Connell); two daughters, Eileen Weiskott (married to Ivan Weiskott) and Mary Jo Vlazny (married to Ken Vlazny); seven grandchildren, and two sisters. He was the youngest of nine siblings and attended the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, where he met Mary Alma. After boarding school, he went to Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts where he studied English and Education, and served in Marine Corps ROTC. Three weeks after their college graduation, James and Mary Alma were married. He continued his military service with the Marine Corps, serving two tours in Vietnam. During his first tour he served as an infantry officer. In his second tour, he served as an intelligence officer, reaching the rank of Captain. He has held management positions at Sealtest Dairy, the Marriott Corporation-Restaurant Division, Weis Markets, Rutter’s Dairy, and the Genesis Company. He was the owner of Charlie and Johnny’s (now The Cove). James retired in 2008. James was an active volunteer for the York County Literacy Council and a founding member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Penn State, York. He was a one-time President of the Danville, PA School Board and was a member of the York County Chamber of Commerce. James had a passion for travel, visiting more than 35 countries in his lifetime and, with his sons, hiking the Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia sections of the Appalachian Trail. A memorial service will be held at Saint Patrick Catholic Church on a future date in York, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the York County Literacy Council.
