For the first time in York College men's track and field history, a pair of Spartans qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship meet in La Crosse, Wisc., from Thursday through Saturday.

Junior Tim Hartung and senior Phil Cavaluchi both earned a trip to the championships in 2013. Hartung will compete in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, while Cavaluchi will compete in the long jump.

Hartung qualified 15th in the 5K as he notched a best time of 14 minutes, 26.58 seconds. That time is 14 seconds behind top qualifier Eli Horton from Central College. Hartung qualified 14th in the 10K with a best time of 30:09.72. That time sits him under 10 seconds out of the top seven qualifiers.

Cavaluchi finished 11th in the nation for the long jump with a best leap of 7.25 meters. The top qualifier in the event, Isaac Vazquez from Wisconsin-La Crosse, recorded a Division III-best 7.67 meters to earn the top spot.

The two Spartans will arrive in La Crosse on Tuesday before getting the opportunity to practice on Wednesday. Cavaluchi will compete first. The long jump will start on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. Hartung will participate in the 10K on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Hartung will then race in the 5K on Saturday afternoon at 5:55 p.m.
