ECONOMY, Pa. -- A western Pennsylvania county has rescheduled what it bills as a World Championship Snow Shovel Riding Contest for Jan. 23.

The Beaver County commissioners say they were going to cancel the 45-year-old event that had been scheduled for Jan. 9 because the assistant recreation director who organized the annual event was laid off last year due to budget cuts.

But stories about the dilemma have prompted four past participants in the race to come forward. They've offered to organize the event, which will be held at Old Economy Park in Economy Borough, about 15 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

The only thing organizers need is for snow to remain on the ground. If it melts, the contest will be rescheduled for the next Saturday that snow is available.
