Cardboard and snow go together like Mentos and Diet Coke - you don't expect wild results, but once combined the inevitable reaction creates an often hilarious, and messy, effect.
Using only cardboard, tape, string, glue and paper - along with a good dose of creativity - participants will build their crafts for the annual race.
Theme: This year's race will feature a "Candy Rush" theme. A wordplay on the popular app, the theme invites racers to build paper sled interpretations of the puzzle game.
They'll face stiff competition from York Container, however. The company plans to create two entries for the competition, according to Design Director Troy Little. Employees of the Springettsbury Township business entered the contest for the first time last year; however, their cardboard chicken dubbed "Fowl Play" failed to reach the finish line.
Team captain Ted DeCello will return to the slopes with York Container, bringing his veteran expertise to the team. After the team's cardboard creation fell apart last year, DeCello said this year would be about winning.
Last year's event saw more than 60 teams take part in the derby. Resort Marketing Director Chris Dudding said the event has grown to be one of the resort's largest and most popular events.
Conditions: Racers will be treated to superior snow conditions after Tuesday's snow storm. The resort received 7 inches of natural snow and added another 19 inches since then. The conditions are in the "best ever" category, according to the resort's website.
Check-in for the derby begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Judging and race will begin at 4 p.m., with divisions in both adult and youth teams.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in the adult and youth divisions. Entries will be judged on originality, team spirit, construction and costumes. The teams must finish the course with all members on the craft at the finish line to win.
"We learned a lot from last year's outing and hope to reach the bottom this time," Little said.
