Tommie Turvey, who trained the Clydesdales for the number one Super Bowl commercial on Sunday, will be in Harrisburg from Thursday, Feb. 21, to Sunday, Feb. 24, for the 11th Annual Pennsylvania Horse World Expo.

Leading equestrian clinicians and entertainers and thousands of horse owners will gather at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center for the expo, which features education, entertainment and shopping.

Turvey and his horses will perform Friday and Saturday evening as part of Theatre Equus, a musical equine revue.

The show is professionally choreographed and scripted, with humans and horses performing together.

Turvey, a trick trainer, movie trainer, and stuntman will have been teaching his horses to do tricks such as lying relaxed on their backs with their feet in the air.

Some of the horses he will have at the show in Harrisburg are American Paint horses, and a mustang named Blade, who was wild until Turvey began working with him when he was 5 years old, said Stephanie Shertzer Lawson, a spokeswoman for the Horse World Expo.

Blade appeared in an opening sequence for the first episode of The Walking Dead, when he got eaten by zombies, said Lawson. The horse has also appeared in several other movies, she said.

"It is amazing that he had taken a horse that was completely wild and unhandled until 5 years old and now it will do anything he wants it to," Lawson said.

Turvey has been coming to the Horse World Expo in Harrisburg for the past five years and is one of the most popular trainers, she said.

Robert Dover, a four time Olympic medalist in dressage, will also be at the expo.

Four off-the-track thoroughbreds will take part in the 100 Day Thoroughbred Challenge. The horses began training on Dec. 1 in Maryland and went to the Maryland Horse World Expo in January.

In Harrisburg, they will be judged in front of an audience, and some will be offered for sale at the end of the 100 days, Lawson said.

"There is a huge problem with unwanted horses, and this is an effort to find new homes for perfectly good thoroughbred race horses that don't make it at the track," said Lawson.

The goal is to get them into a new career, she said.

More than 500 vendors will have booths with horse-related merchandise.

Horsekeeping technology and apparel, barns, artwork, books, equestrian vacations, feed, trailers, tack, training and schools will be featured.

Separate tickets are needed for Theatre Equus on Friday and Saturday evening, and range from $12 to $24 online at www.horseworldexpo.com.

The Pennsylvania Horse World Expo hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 23, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.

Admission to the Horse World Expo is $12 for adults, $6 for children age 7 to 12, and free for children age 6 and under. Tickets can be purchased with cash at the door, or online at www.horseworldexpo.com.
