Celebrating our 110th anniversary as a Pennsylvania-based family business, we are sad to see G.A. & F.C. Wagman's Pennsylvania workforce decline. Over the past five years, Wagman's Pennsylvania workforce has declined over 30 percent due to lack of transportation construction vision.

Clearly, there is a need for improvements to Pennsylvania's infrastructure. The decreased volume of projects is due to lack of action by elected officials to fund badly needed upgrades to the state's highway and transportation system. Without additional funding, this trend will continue.

Wagman has opened offices in southern regions to work with states that have more long-term vision for transportation. This affects Pennsylvania's engineers and materials and equipment suppliers, too.

Pennsylvania's deteriorating infrastructure cannot wait. We are adding structurally deficient bridges to a list growing at such a rapid rate that soon it will exceed the state Department of Transportation's ability to repair them, resulting in an even higher percent of deficient bridges -- a percentage that is already one of the highest in the nation. As deficient bridges are closed or have weight restrictions imposed on them, it will stifle Pennsylvania's struggling economy even more.

We share APC's and PennDOT's concerns about the increasing numbers of structurally deficient bridges and unsafe roads, which citizens depend on for work, school and daily obligations. Wagman was the proud general contractor for the emergency repair work in Lopez, Pa. When their bridge was closed, the local citizens had a 25-mile detour. These emergency situations and inefficient delays could be avoided with adequate funding, allowing for long-term planning and properly maintained structures.

People and businesses depend on the keystone state to move goods and provide services. The deteriorating infrastructure is negatively affecting the economy, productivity and safety of citizens travelling in Pennsylvania.

The cost of doing nothing is too expensive for Pennsylvania; support transportation.
