My fellow Pennsylvania citizens, I think we all agree that voting is a sacred constitutional right and that every registered Pennsylvania voter needs to be able to vote on Nov. 6. The new voter ID law may not affect those of us with driver's licenses, but for those who don't drive or don't already have a photo ID, this law creates an undue burden.
The photo ID may be free, but if one needs to pay for a copy of a birth certificate in order to get an ID, then it amounts to an illegal poll tax. It is estimated that up to 10 percent of Pennsylvania voters may not be able to vote on Nov. 6 due to lack of ID or not getting one in time. That is unacceptable.
I see deceit in the way Republicans claimed they passed the law to prevent voter fraud, yet later admitted that they had no evidence of in-person voter fraud ever happening in the state.
Worse yet, Mike Turzai, Pennsylvania GOP House majority leader, said the voter ID law will allow Mitt Romney to win the state, openly admitting to a political motivation for the law.
Where are the liberty-loving Tea Party members? Why aren't more people protesting this? Take out your pen, get on your computer, and get on the phone to your state representatives and senators. Tell them to repeal this law or put it off until a better system of ID is developed. This is too much, too soon for the next election.
