3D mammography technology is now being used at the WellSpan Women’s Imaging Center on the Apple Hill Medical Center in York.
WellSpan has brought state-of-the-art women’s health technology to York.
“The 3D mammography system and biopsy system are now both available at York,” said Dan Carrigan, a representative for WellSpan. The technology is being used in the WellSpan Women’s Imaging Center at the Apple Hill Medical Campus on Monument Road in York.
The 3D mammography system by Hologic Inc., called Genius 3D, has shown a 41 percent relative increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers, a 29 percent relative increase in detection of all forms of breast cancer as well as reduced the amount of women recalled for additional imaging, according to a 2014 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The new biopsy system allows for 360-degree access to breast tissue and has a quicker procedure time.
“This will certainly be beneficial to a subset of our patients, in whom traditional mammography is not as effective as 3D in detecting abnormalities,” said Dr. Douglas Arbittier, Vice President of WellSpan’s Oncology Service Line.
