A select Palmer Candy product and a Hostess product have been removed from Giant shelves after their companies recalled them this week, according to a release from Giant.

The following products are being recalled because of potential salmonella contamination:

• White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies, 9 pack, with a UPC of 888109111571.

• Palmer Candy Holiday Gift Bowl, 22 oz., with a UPC of 7723217285 and expiration dates between April 18, 2017, and May 1, 2017.

Giant had not gotten any reports of illnesses as of Tuesday.

Salmonella infections can be life threatening to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, elderly people or those with HIV infection or who are undergoing chemotherapy, the release states.

The most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within  72 hours, according to the release.

Customers who have purchased these products should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant for a full refund.

Those looking for more information may call Palmer Candy Co. at 712-258-5543, Hostess Brands at 800-483-7253, or Giant's customer service at 888-814-4268.
