Thursday's major winter snow storm has thrown a major monkey wrench into postseason action in the York-Adams League.
The boys' and girls' basketball championship games have now been postponed until Saturday.
The boys' game was originally scheduled for Thursday evening, but it's been moved until 5 p.m. Saturday.
The contest will still be played at York College, as originally scheduled. The girls' championship game was to be played Friday evening, but has already been postponed and will be played at 8 p.m. Saturday, also at York College. The York College gym will be cleared between games. Tickets for both games will be sold at the door. Fans will need to purchase a separate ticket for each game.
Division I champion Central York (21-2) will take on York High (18-5) for the boys' crown.
The girls' game will pit York Catholic (20-3) against Dover (20-2).
Swimming and diving: The York-Adams Diving Championships, which were also set for Thursday evening, were also postponed and will now be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Central York High School.
The York-Adams Swimming Championships are still scheduled for this weekend at Central York, but all sessions will now be held Saturday. The first session was originally set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday. The four swimming sessions Saturday are set for 1:30 p.m. (boys), 3:30 p.m. (girls), 5:30 p.m. (boys) and 7:30 p.m. (girls). The gallery will be cleared after each session. Spectators will be required to purchase a ticket for each session they wish to attend.
" Safety is a concern, so Saturday creates a better situation for everyone," Chris Adams said in an email. Adams is the York Suburban athletic director and the man in charge of the swimming and diving championships. "I was concerned there would be many parents that would not be able to watch their (children) swim due to swimming all sessions on Saturday, which is why we will run four sessions of swimming. I believe the new schedule will accommodate all spectators and will create a championship atmosphere all day."
Adams said Central has made its gym available for the swimmers to rest, using sleeping bags and pillows. Adams offered a "thank you to Central for allowing the (York-Adams League) to use the gym as a quiet resting place."
Other postponements: The York-Adams League isn't the only organization impacted.
Penn State York was scheduled to play host to Penn State Lehigh Valley on Thursday in a basketball doubleheader. Those two games have now been moved until Sunday at Penn State York, with the women's game slated to start at 4 p.m., followed by the men's game at 6 p.m.
That's part of a very busy schedule for the Penn State York hoopsters. Both the PSY men and women will visit Penn State DuBois on Saturday afternoon and then visit Penn State Schuylkill on Monday evening. The Penn State University Athletic Conference playoffs are then slated to begin Tuesday. Both PSY teams are enjoying good seasons. The PSY men are 19-2 overall and 13-1 in the PSUAC South Division and the PSY women are 12-7 and 7-5.
Penn National Race Course also canceled its shows on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings as it digs out from its latest storm.
In addition, the District 3 basketball playoffs are scheduled to start Friday evening with play-in games in Class AAAA and Class AAA boys and girls. The AAA girls' game pitting Northeastern at Donegal has been moved until 7 p.m. Monday.
Northeastern is scheduled to play host to Wyomissing in a boys' AAA play-in game and New Oxford is set to welcome Harrisburg in a AAAA girls' play-in game. At latest report, those contests are still scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. Friday.
An interesting non-league girls' basketball game that was set for Saturday was canceled. Greencastle (21-1) was scheduled to play at Delone Catholic (18-4). Greencastle is the No. 3 seed in the District 3-AAA playoffs, while Delone is No. 2 in AA.
York Tech's bowling match vs. ELCO at Cedar Lanes on Thursday was also canceled.
