The Spring Grove wrestling team remained undefeated on Wednesday night with a 51-20 York-Adams League Division I victory at Dallastown, improving to 5-0 in York-Adams Division I and 10-0 overall.
The match featured three bouts between some of the top wrestlers in the league.
Dallastown senior Rodney Sunday (126 pounds), who last year took third place in the District 3-AAA individual tournament and placed fifth at states, beat Spring Grove's Levi Witmer by major decision, 9-1. Witmer, a junior, is one of the better 132-pounders in the league.
Dallastown junior Nick Shields, a returning District 3-AAA qualifier, normally competes at 132 pounds, but wrestled up at 138 pounds Wednesday night against Spring Grove senior Dakota Laughman, who placed fifth at districts a year ago. Laughman defeated Shields, 9-4.
Dallastown freshman Bryce Shields, one of the better 138-pounders in the league, also wrestled up at 145 pounds against Spring Grove senior Mike Hartman, a returning District 3-AAA qualifier. Hartman defeated Shields, 9-4.
Overall, Spring Grove won 10 of the 14 bouts, getting pins from Alec Zorbaugh (113), Marcus Kehr (152), Mason Bentzel (160), Hunter Sterner (220) and C.J. Sterner (285). The Wildcats (3-2 in the division) received a major decision from Wes Hoover (138) and pins from Bailey Druck (170) and Michael Anderson (182).
Spring Grove still has upcoming league matches against Northeastern and Red Lion before next Thursday's showdown at undefeated New Oxford (4-0, 9-0). That match will likely decide the winner of Division I.
York Tech 43, Littlestown 42: At Spry, the match ended in a 42-42 tie, but under PIAA rules,Tech got the win on the Criteria H tiebreaker -- the greater number of first points. The Spartans received pins from Sam Hoover (106), Travis Kleiser (126), Luis Perez (132), Brandon Nikolaus (145), DeAundre Jones (160) and Adoniyah Johnson (195). For the Thuderbolts, Ian McClure (138), Adam Smith (152), Connor Geiman (170), Dan Arnett (182) and Zach MacCleod (285) had pins.
South Western 54, Red Lion 2: At South Western, the host Mustangs won all but one bout to improve to 3-1 in York-Adams Division I. They picked up pins from Logan Bowman (195), Seth Janney (220) and Skylar Bowman (285). Janney, a freshman, is proving to be one of the best 220-pounders in the league. By pinning Red Lion's Jared Schell, who normally competes at 285 pounds, Janney now has pins over two of the better 285-pounders in the league after pinning New Oxford's Brock Hartman two weeks ago.
Dover 40, Susquehannock 15: At Susquehannock, the visiting Eagles fell behind early, losing the first three bouts by decision, but took nine of the final 11 bouts to get the victory. Dover picked up pins from Tad Pequignot (145), Logan Ambrose (160), Austin Richcreek (220) and Brandon Rodriguez (113) to improve to 3-2 in York-Adams Division I.
Hershey 44, York Suburban 24: At Suburban, the home team got pins from Austin McMillan (113), Dan Strong (220) and Ch'aim Smith (285) in the non-league setback.
