The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing will play host to its 39th annual convention this weekend.
The event will be held on the restored Latimore Valley Fairgrounds site, which is home to the museum. The Latimore Valley Fairgrounds is located just off Route 15 between Dillsburg and York Springs.
This year's EMMR convention holds special meaning for many in York County. It will honor the memory of Paul Miller and the organization he held dear to his heart, the York County Racing Club.
The convention starts Friday with vintage race cars from around the country arriving for the weekend. The museum opens at 9 a.m. Friday.
The big event on Friday's schedule is a roundtable discussion: "Remembering Paul Miller and the York County Racing Club." This discussion begins at 10:30 a.m., and will be hosted by former drivers Lynn Paxton and Dizzy Dean. I'm honored to have been asked to sit on the panel for this discussion.
The museum remains open until 9 p.m. Friday, with an evening "Cruise In" set for 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Meanwhile, many of the vintage race cars will make the short trek to Williams Grove to be a part of Friday's racing program. The vintage race cars will be on display during the Grove's racing program, and will have some "track time."
Saturday will be a full day at Latimore Valley with a Johnny Thompson Reunion and track time for the vintage race cars from noon until 3 p.m. That evening the vintage race cars join the racing program at Lincoln Speedway.
On Sunday, the day begins with a "church service" at 9 a.m. followed by a general membership meeting at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., the year's grand marshals, Kenny Brenn and Bob and Linda Miller, will be introduced, with a tribute to Paul Miller at 11:15 a.m.
Track time for the vintage race cars is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Also, Brenn will be part of a roundtable discussion from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
RACING SLATE: Williams Grove has another two-race weekend planned.
Friday, the sprint cars compete in the popular twin 20s program, with two 20-lap features wrapping up the evening. As mentioned, the vintage race cars of the EMMR will be on hand. Saturday, the super sportsmen, limited-late models and street stocks compete.
Trailway is in action Friday, with the 358 sprints racing in the first night of the Trailway-Lincoln Shootout. A $2,000 point fund will be distributed between the top 10 drivers in the two-night affair. The 600cc micro sprints, limited stocks and street stocks also compete at Trailway.
Saturday's show at Lincoln is the second night of the shootout for the 358 sprints. Of course, the sprint cars will also be a big part of the program, and again the vintage racers form the EMMR will be on hand.
At Port Royal on Saturday, the track's biggest winner, who is wrapping up his final year of racing, will be honored. The Keith Kauffman Tribute will include a 33-lap feature for the sprint cars. Much of Kauffman's early success came at the wheel of his own No. K33. Kauffman has 129 sprint-car wins at the Port, and two late-model wins there. This past weekend the legendary driver finished second after leading part of the race.
The late models, pro stocks and an enduro dash complete the program.
Selinsgrove offers the 358 sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners on Saturday, while at Hagerstown it's the late-model sportsmen, a Cornett Tribute for the pure stocks and the hobby stocks on Saturday.
Susquehanna Speedway Park plays host to the limited-late models, street stocks, Xtreme stocks, road warriors, minivans and the Penn Mar vintage stocks Saturday.
The sprint cars return to the Bedford Fairgrounds for action on Sunday, and next Tuesday the sprint cars join the modifieds at New Jersey's New Egypt Speedway.
1968: This was another busy weekend on the local circuit back in 1968.
Things kicked off Friday night at Williams Grove, where Mitch Smith drove the Regester Chevy No. 6 to his 11th overall victory of the season.
On Saturday at Lincoln, Rick Schmelyun Sr. drove Al Hamilton's No. 77 to his third victory of the season. Schmelyun added to his weekend pleasure with his fourth win of the season on Sunday evening at Susquehanna.
At Port Royal on Saturday, it was Johnny Grum who put Harry Fletcher's No. 66 in victory lane for the fourth time that season, while out at Jennerstown, Milt Miller drove the Mopar-powered Hummer No. 49 to his eighth overall win of the season.
At Selinsgrove on Saturday, Ray Tilley was in victory lane for the 22nd time that season. Then on Sunday afternoon, Tilley took the wing off Bud Grimm's potent No. 88 Ford to win a special URC race at Williams Grove for win No. 23 on the season.
It should be noted here that a number of drivers raced at both the Grove and Susquehanna that day. In fact, the top four in the Grove's URC event were local regulars. Three drivers scored top-five finishes in each event. Gus Linder was second at the Grove and fourth at Susky, Bobby Adamson was second at Susky and third at the Grove and Bill Roynon was third at Susky and fourth at the Grove.
Down south, Ray Dovel had a productive weekend in the Lee Stultz No. S-3 machine. He scored his 14th win of the season at Winchester, Va., on Saturday, and backed it up with win No. 15 on Sunday at Hagerstown.
