HERSHEY -- The Dallastown boys' tennis team is going back to the PIAA State Class AAA Tournament.
The Wildcats earned a berth in states for the second straight season by defeating Hershey, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon in the District 3 third-place match.
John Schmitt and Kyle Salaga scored straight-set victories for Dallastown at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and Michael Gibbs and Dalton Childs prevailed in straight sets at No. 1 doubles. Gibbs and Childs pulled out a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Aaron Ellenberger and Jacob Jastrebski.
Dallastown's Payce Berridge and Hershey's Ben Gette split the first two sets at No. 3 singles. Berridge was leading 4-2 in the third set when their match was halted because a team winner had been determined.
The Wildcats' Nick Jones and Nick Barley captured the first set at No. 2 doubles, but Hershey's David Muscaslu and Kabir Singh rallied to win the highly competitive match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Dallastown (15-2) will face the District 1 (suburban Philadelphia) champion in the first round of the state AAA team tournament on Tuesday. The site and time for the match have not yet been determined.
The semifinals of the District 1 Team Tournament are set for Thursday. Conestoga will take on Council Rock North, and Lower Merion will challenge Harriton.
