The York City School Board, in a special meeting Tuesday night, unanimously decided to vacate the seat held by Beverly Atwater.

Atwater, who was in the midst of her third term on the board, has rarely attended school board meetings in recent months. But, although board President Margie Orr originally indicated the absences would be the cause for Atwater's removal, the board instead vacated the seat because they believe Atwater now lives in Maryland with her son.

Orr said they don't have concrete proof, but have heard "too strong of opinions" saying she no longer lives in York City as required. Atwater is allowed to prove her residency and fight to get her spot back, although she has had no contact with Orr or the district in months.

"It has to come to an end," Orr said.

Applications will be taken through Dec. 14 for Atwater's remaining year in office. Orr said the board is seeking someone interested in running for a four-year seat.
