Greg Hodnett and Danny Dietrich are locked into a tight battle for the Speedway Motors Central Pennsylvania Sprint Car Series point title.

Over the weekend, the pair swapped the point lead twice, with Hodnett ending the weekend with a three-point edge.

Hodnett leads Dietrich in wins, 8-5, but Dietrich has racked up more top-five and top-10 finishes than Hodnett. Dietrich has been in the top five 19 times, including his five wins, while Hodnett has 18 top fives, including his eight wins. Dietrich has seven finishes between sixth and 10th, while Hodnett has four finishes in those positions.

---Brent Marks finished second in the season opener at Lincoln back on the last weekend in February, and then won at Lincoln in the second race of the season on March 3.

After that, up until last weekend, he only had one other top-five finish, that being a fourth at Lincoln on April 7. He did rack up 11 other finishes between sixth and 10th in that time frame.

Last weekend, Marks equaled his top-five finishes for the season. He won Friday at Williams Grove after a torrid duel with Cory Haas. Then at Lincoln, he nipped Fred Rahmer for second on the final lap. At Susquehanna on Sunday, Marks nipped Lance Dewease for fifth on the final lap.

---If anyone wonders how Frankie Herr has won 10 super-sportsman tour point titles all they need to do is look at Herr's record so far this season.

While rain has hampered the super-sportsman racers this season, it hasn't messed with Herr's outstanding consistency. The super sportsmen have competed five times at Williams Grove this season, and once each at Lincoln and Port Royal. In those seven races, Herr hasn't finished outside the top four.

He has won once at Williams Grove, where he also has a second, two thirds and a fourth. At Port Royal he finished second and at Lincoln he was third.

---"Little Freddy" Rahmer made his first Lincoln Speedway sprint-car start on Saturday with the 305 sprints.

The 16-year-old, third-generation racer won the consy and then finished ninth in the feature.

I believe it was only Rahmer's third time in the 305 sprinter. He raced a few weeks ago at Williams Grove and then raced at Utica Rome, N.Y., with the 305s that were on the program with the All Stars.

PIT STOPS

WEEKEND SCHEDULE: Racing actually begins Tuesday night for local racers with two events.

The local sprint cars will journey to Bridgeport, N.J., for a special show. Michael Heffner, who owns the sprint car driven by Daryn Pittman, is promoting a special race at the big 5/8-mile oval on the banks of the Delaware River. Heffner is offing $5,000 to win the event, but if the winner has paid the Gambler's Fee of $100, that total will be upped to $7,000.

While our sprint cars are venturing to New Jersey Tuesday, the Race of Champions modifieds, which include many Jersey racers, will venture to Selinsgrove, where they'll be joined by the roadrunners.

The ROC mods then visit Lincoln on Wednesday evening in a show that will also feature the 360/358 sprint cars.

Williams Grove has a two-race weekend planned again. Friday the sprints and 358 sprints compete, while on Saturday the super sportsmen are joined by the limited-late models and street stocks.

Trailway also races twice this weekend. Friday the 358 sprints and limited-late models headline, while on Saturday the micro sprints take top billing.

It's Kid's Night Saturday at Lincoln, where there will be plenty of activities for the children. On the track, the sprints, 358 sprints and thundercars are in action.

Port Royal hosts the sprints, late models and 305 sprints for Camera and Autograph Night Saturday.

At Selinsgrove on Saturday, it's the 358 sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners for Pepsi Night.

Susquehanna Speedway Park hosts another Saturday Night Shootout with the limited-late models, street stocks, Xtreme stocks, minivans and Road Warriors in action.

Hagerstown will host the late models, pure stocks and hobby stocks on Saturday.

50 YEARS AGO: Rain played a big part in the local racing action 50 years ago this weekend.

Lincoln was rained out on Saturday, and Port Royal managed to get to the feature before rain hit. The Port would have a make-up feature as part of the following week's program.

Friday at Williams Grove, Neil Haight raced to his first Grove win of the season. Haight drove Bud Grimm's No. 88 to his third overall win of the year, with Leroy Felty in second. Moe Harden, Roger Sowers and Johnny Dubendorff completed the top five.

On Sunday at Susquehanna, Bobby Hersh drove the Trone No. 39 to his sixth overall win of the season. The win over archrival Johnny Mackison was Hersh's third at Susky for the season, and second in a row there. Gene Goodling, Sowers and Ralph Smith completed the top five.
