STATE COLLEGE -- Penn State wrestling coach and Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson is deferring to USA Wrestling when it comes to the effort to restore the sport into the 2020 Olympic program.
Sanderson said before practice Tuesday that he and his top-ranked Penn State team would do whatever needed if asked to help by USA Wrestling, which has formalized a plan for a committee charged with getting the sport back into the Olympics. Sanderson it would take a lot of work to conduct the research needed to make wrestling's case.
The International Olympic Committee last week recommended removing wrestling as a core sport in 2020. The decision had sparked strong responses from many in the sport including Sanderson, one of wrestling's most well-known figures.
