Central York swept past George Washington on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals.

The Panthers, the third-place team from District 3, won by the game scores of 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 at Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia.

George Washington was the District 12-AAA champion.

In Saturday's quarterfinals, Central York will play Central Dauphin. The District 3-AAA runner-up Rams defeated District 11-AAA runner-up Whitehall, 25-21, 25-23, 25-11, in a first-round game Wednesday night at Wilson High School. The quarterfinal is set for noon Saturday at Mechanicsburg High School.

Alex Klunk (15 kills), Royce Clemens (seven kills), Josh VanWyk (six kills, three blocks) and Dylan Hose (42 assists) paced the Panthers.

"We played well enough to win, but not as well as I would have hoped," Central York coach Brad Livingston said. "I'm sure the long bus ride had something to do with that, but we put ourselves in that position (by finishing third in District 3). Fortunately, we were able to bear down and earn some tough points to win sets. ... I'm very happy with the win, but I'm happier to get back in the practice gym and see what happens next. ... This is states. Survive and advance."

Livingston was impressed with the quality of George Washington's players. District 12 is not normally known for high-quality volleyball.

"I left the gym thinking that is probably as good a team to come out of Philadelphia in recent years," Livingston said. "That team played hard and did the right things. They forced us to beat them. If they played in our league, they'd probably do all right."

Central York, which was ranked No. 3 in the state in AAA in the latest Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association poll, improved to 15-3 on the season.

Central Dauphin was ranked fifth in the state in AAA in the latest PVCA poll.
