DALLASTOWN -- The senior star and the freshman phenom played major roles on Tuesday afternoon as Red Lion swept a pair of key York-Adams League Division I track-and-field meets from its arch-rival.

The Lions edged Dallastown, 77-73, in the boys' meet, and scored an 83-62 victory in the girls' meet.

Ryan Knisely, the senior, sprinted to victories in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay team .

Angelica Gonzalez, the freshman, captured the 100 and 200 dashes and 300 hurdles.

"She (Gonzalez) was our best-kept secret," Red Lion girls' coach Jason Smith said. "We've known about her since seventh grade."

burst to win the 200.

"Angelica has such a strong finish," Smith said. "We're still working on her starts."

Gonzalez is certainly a key performer, but Red Lion also gets points from a lot of other athletes.

Amanda Young cleared five feet to take the high jump and 10 feet (10-3) to grab first in the pole vault. Numerous other Lions contributed to enable the team to prevail, 48-34 on the track and 35-28 in the field.

"We have a small team, 28 girls, but every one of them is talented," Smith said.

Knisely leads Lion boys: Speaking of talent, Knisely displayed the form that enabled him to qualify for last year's state meet in two events, the 200 and 400.

Following his trio of firsts in the 100, 200 and 400, Knisely positioned himself on the track to take the baton from Caleb Gatchell on the final leg of the 1,600 relay.

The Gatchell-to-Knisely handoff was smooth, but Dallastown's wasn't. The Wildcats' baton fell to the all-weather surface. The teams were almost dead even at the time.

Knisely sprinted around the track without being challenged.

"I saw something (before the exchange), but I wasn't sure what it was because I was focusing on my lane," Knisely said.

Lions' standout was pleased with his performances (:11.3 in the 100, :22.2 in the 200 and :52.0 in the 400) on a cold, blustery afternoon, but he was more thrilled with his team's triumph that kept the Lions unbeaten in Division I.

"This is great to win this meet," he said. "Dallastown's always tough to beat, they're our rival."

The meet was just as close as Red Lion boys' coach Todd Barshinger expected it to be.

"Amazingly, 77-73," Barshinger said when asked what score he had in mind going into the meet. "Although, it didn't quite work out the way I anticipated."

Red Lion clinched the victory when Brian Weaver and Tyler Crawford placed second and third, respectively in the pole vault, the closing event.

Big day for Allison: Dallastown's Jared Allison won the pole vault with a leap of 13-6. The Wildcats' star also captured the 110 hurdles and high jump.

Red Lion built a 52-35 advantage on the track, winning all three relays. Dallastown answered by outscoring the visitors, 38-25 in the field events.

"The 4-by-8 (3,200 relay) was up for grabs, and when we won that, I thought it set the tone for the meet," Barshinger said.

Nick McCabe, Nate Pardoe, Josh Pardoe and Gatchell handled the legs of the 3,200 for the Lions.

Gatchell also won the 1,600, and McCable took the 800.

"Gatchell was in four events, he was huge today," Barshinger said. "Ryan (Knisely), he is good anywhere from 100 to 400, plus relays. I knew we needed to win the 400. And winning the 4-by-1 (400 relay) without him (Knisely) was huge."

Andrew Menges, Seth Haight, Jason Milton and Wit Norrie placed first in the 400 relay.

"The pole vault was the only event in which I was pretty sure what the score would be," Barshinger said of a meet that could play a major role in the division race.

The Red Lion boys and girls are now 3-0-0 in Division I, and Dallastown's boys and girls are 2-1-0.

OTHER BOYS' TRACK & FIELD

EASTERN 114, KEN NARD-DALE 36: At Wrightsville, Alec McKee led the Golden Knights to the York-Adams Division II victory, capturing first in the javelin, shot put and discus. Jake Kautz won the triple jump and long jump for the Knights, while Richard Kyte won the 110 and 300 hurdles. For the Rams, Dylan Moynihan won the pole vault and 400. Eastern improved to 4-0 in the division and is now in sole possession of first.

NORTHEASTERN 80, YORK SUBURBAN 70: At Suburban, the Bobcats took first in seven of the 11 track events to secure the York-Adams Division II victory. Individually for the Bobcats, Anthony Vitacco won the 300 hurdles and javelin, and Braheem Riley won the 800 and triple jump. Northeastern improved to 2-1 in the division, while Suburban fell to 3-1 in the division.

WEST YORK 85, DOVER 65: At West York, the Bulldogs captured nine of the 11 track events to secure the York-Adams Division II victory. For the Bulldogs, Alex Moyer won the 300 hurdles and pole vault, Kevin Chambers won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Justin Warfel won the 100 and 200. For the Eagles, Mike Lopresti won the javelin, shot put and discus. West York improved to 2-1 in the division.

YORK HIGH 89, NEW OXFORD 61: At New Oxford, Jabarri Brown won the triple jump, long jump and high jump to lead the Bearcats. Anderson Novelin added wins in the shot put and discus for York High.

BERMUDIAN SPRINGS 83, YORK TECH 67: At Spry, Joe Watkins led the Eagles to the York-Adams Division III victory by capturing first in the javelin and discus. For the Spartans, Jeremiah Gilbert won the triple jump, 110 and 300 hurdles, while Travis Gudz won the 1,600 and 3,200.

SOUTH WESTERN 110, SUSQUEHANNOCK 40: At Glen Rock, the Mustangs took first in 17 of the 18 events to secure the victory. Jerome Robinson led the Mustangs by capturing first in the triple jump, 110 and 300 hurdles.

OTHER GIRLS' TRACK & FIELD

EASTERN 116, KEN NARD-DALE 33: At Wrightsville, the Golden Knights captured six of the seven field events to secure the York-Adams Division II victory. Individually for the Golden Knights, Rebecah Delp won the high jump, 100 and 300 hurdles, Shauna Hildebrand won the triple jump and long jump and Katelyn Stine won the 100 and 200. For the Rams, Kayla White won the 1,600 and 3,200. Eastern improved to 4-0 in the division and remain tied for first place with Suburban.

YORK SUBURBAN 92, NORTHEASTERN 58: At Suburban, the Trojans captured nine of the 11 track events to secure the York-Adams Division II victory. Individually for the Trojans, Lily Corsaro won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Taylor Landis won the triple jump and high jump. For the Bobcats, Teshia Clayborne won the discus and shot put and Sarah Williamson won the long jump and 100 hurdles. Suburban improved to 4-0 in the division and remain tied for first with Eastern.

DOVER 95, WEST YORK 51: At West York, the Eagles took first in five of the seven field events to secure the York-Adams Division II victory. Individually for the Eagles, Steph Ferry won the shot put and discus. For the Bulldogs, Brianna Henderson won the long jump, triple jump and 200.

NEW OXFORD 101, YORK HIGH 44: At New Oxford, Jamila Janneh won the long jump, triple jump and high jump to power the Colonials. Maddie Slagle also swept the hurdles for the winners. Donella Nelson won the 100 and 200 for York High.

BERMUDIAN SPRINGS 102.5, YORK TECH 38.5: At Spry, Karra Thomason led the Eagles to the York-Adams Division III win by capturing first in the 100, 200 and 400. For the Spartans, Acia Stewart won the 100 and 300 hurdles.

SOUTH WESTERN 88, SUSQUEHANNOCK 62: At Glen Rock, Katie Harman led the Mustangs, capturing first in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. For the Warriors, Alesha Herman won the 100 and 200.
