A Warrington Township man shot and killed his 81-year-old mother before he turned the gun on himself in murder-suicide Thursday afternoon, police said.

York County Coroner Pam Gay identified the woman as Shirley P. Westheafer and her son as Donald James Cassel Jr., 57, both of 25 Rocky Wood Lane.

Both died as the result of gunshot wounds to the head, Gay said.

Autopsies will not be performed, she said.

State police troopers and medics were called to the rural home at about 2:20 p.m., said Trooper Robert Hicks, state police spokesman. Shootings: Hicks said Cassel shot his mother with a shotgun in an upstairs bedroom of the home.

"He then turned the weapon on himself and killed himself," Hicks said.

Westheafer is not originally from the area, but had been living at the Cassel's home for some time, Gay said.

Westheafer moved in with her son and daughter-in-law because she could no longer live by herself because of heath issues, including dementia, Gay said.

Cassel's wife, who was home at the time of the shooting, was not injured and called 911 after hearing the shots, Hick said.

The home where all three lived is in a rural area. Rocky Wood Lane is dotted with homes set back in a wooded area.

Cassel's wife, whose name was not released, remained at the scene as state police investigated Thursday evening. A few neighbors gathered on Rocky Wood Lane and were also questioned by investigators.

Hicks said a motive is not yet known, adding Cassel did not leave a note.
