A York City teen escaped life-threatening injury Monday afternoon when he was shot in the knee, police said.
The 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was treated at York Hospital for his wound, police said.
The teen told officers he left high school early and was walking through Williams Park about 2:10 p.m. with two friends, headed to the Smith Street home of one of them, according to York City Police.
The teen recounted that as they neared Smith Street they saw an SUV nearly hit a pedestrian, who yelled at the driver and words were exchanged, police said.
That's when gunfire rang out and the teen was struck, police said.
Neither the teen nor his friends called 911, according to Capt. Russ Tschopp.
"He said he just didn't want to (call 911)," the captain said.
Instead, he walked to the McDonald's on South George Street, where his mother picked him up and took him to York Hospital, Tschopp said.
