Ontario Power Generation proposes a radioactive waste disposal facility at the Bruce nuclear power site in the city of Kincardine. If approved, it would house more than 200,000 cubic feet of waste about a mile from the lake.
In a letter Wednesday, Democratic Reps. Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township, John Dingell of Dearborn, Dan Kildee of Flint and Sander Levin of Royal Oak say "the Great Lakes pump billions of dollars into the economy and support thousands of good-paying jobs."
The letter asks a review panel of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to consider the 10,000-year risk of nuclear contamination to the lakes.
Hearings are underway this week.
