Coopersburg police say they responded early Sunday to a home after a child called 911, whispered "help us" and hung up.
The Express-Times says (http://bit.ly/14Yty72) by the time officers got to the house, Melissa Amey and her three kids were at a nearby convenience store. Amey told officers that Miguel Espada attacked her and threatened her with a knife.
Mother and kids escaped the house. Court records say Espada lives there but didn't say what his relationship is with Amey.
Espada surrendered to officers at the house, after an hour of refusing to come out. He's charged with assault, endangerment and related counts. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
