PITTSBURGH—Authorities in western Pennsylvania say an elderly resident of a Pittsburgh-area nursing home was rescued after tumbling down a steep hillside.

Officials of the Shady Rest home and the city's emergency medical services department said the man, who is in his 80s, fell 25 to 30 feet down the North Side slope on Friday afternoon.

Acting rescue division chief James Holman said he was conscious and alert and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in stable condition. His name wasn't released.

Nurse Peggy Cherkes said she went looking for the man after not finding him in his room and heard him calling for help, so she climbed down to try to keep him calm until help arrived. Cherkes said he was scared and had some bruises but seemed otherwise uninjured.
