FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa.—Police say a 58-year-old man who barricaded himself inside the bathroom of an eastern Pennsylvania sporting goods store initially had only a 105-year-old gun that didn't work.

That man, Mark McCarty, of Middletown, killed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun that he forced a clerk to give to him after threatening the worker with the non-working gun.

Falls Township police Lt. Hank Ward tells The (Doylestown) Intelligencer ( http://bit.ly/Yb3vGr) that McCarty's gun was so old, there's no ammunition available for it and, even if there had been, the gun "wouldn't work."

The incident took place in a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Fairless hills on Saturday. McCarty entered the store about 7 p.m. and fatally shot himself more than four hours later.

The store and nearby businesses were evacuated, but nobody else was hurt.
