Troopers from the Belle Vernon state police barracks say the boy, Owen Harris, was shot shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday.
Trooper Stefani Plume says the gun belongs to the boy's stepfather. She didn't immediately say how the boy accessed the gun.
The boy's mother and stepfather were home at the time, but Plume says "it appears as though the incident was just a tragic accident."
The boy was taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC where he was in critical condition Friday.
The shooting occurred in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.
