PHILADELPHIA—A bridge connecting Philadelphia and southern New Jersey has been reopened after a fire shut it down in both directions.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. Friday at the base of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge under one of its concrete support piers.

Pat Reilly, from the Burlington County Bridge Commission public safety director Patrick Reilly says the fire was a "freak accident."

He said the wooden bulkheads on the pier below one of the bridge's towers apparently caught fire from a spark from an electrical line.

No injuries were reported.
