Blakely resident Tom Dubas has launched a Facebook page calling for Mellow's name to be removed from the park. Dubas wants to rename it in honor of Pennsylvania Army National Guard Sgt. Jan Argonish, a borough resident killed in Afghanistan in 2007.
"He was just a good person, and I just felt that something should be done to recognize his contribution," Dubas said of Argonish, who was 26 when he was killed. "Then, when the other incident occurred with the state senator pleading guilty to federal charges, I felt it was a very poor message we were sending by keeping his name on that park."
The Facebook page has garnered more than 350 "likes" since being created Tuesday night.
Mellow Park was named after the former Senate Democratic leader in the early 1990s. Mellow pleaded guilty in a public corruption case and will report to federal prison on Jan. 15 to begin a 16-month sentence.
Council President Joseph Quinn said residents would have to present a petition to the council to put the question on the election ballot.
"Personally, I think the senator has done an awful lot of good, especially in Blakely borough. At the present time, I don't think I'd want to change it," he told The Times-Tribune of Scranton, though he said he would accept residents' input. "If the people wanted it, that's what council would do."
