PHILADELPHIA—Police have charged a gambling figure in a South Philadelphia slaying that has rattled a mob trial now under way.

Forty-one-year-old Anthony Nicodemo is charged with fatally shooting 50-year-old Gino DiPietro in broad daylight Wednesday in South Philadelphia.

The shooting occurred just hours after federal prosecutors wrapped up two months of evidence in the mob racketeering trial of alleged Philadelphia boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi.

DiPietro's name has come up during the trial, so a federal judge plans to question jurors Tuesday about media accounts of the slaying.

Nicodemo is on probation for his low-level role in an illegal betting ring operating out of an Atlantic City, N.J., casino.

It's not immediately clear if Nicodemo has an attorney. He was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and awaits a bail hearing.
