Cheryl Gibson owns the 8-year-old gelding named Sus. She says the horse is expected to survive, though it's being taken to the Equine Specialty Hospital in Burton, Ohio.
Gibson says she's hoping the horse was shot accidentally by a hunter as opposed to being purposely targeted but says, "We may never know."
The horse was shot in the left side of the head on Friday, sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., which is when the animal was outside near a barn in East Mead Township, about 90 miles north of Pittsburgh.
The horse is worth about $5,000 and is exhibited as a pleasure horse and at 4-H competitions.
